MADE UP: CONFESSIONS OF A COUNTER GIRL
![]()
How could I not see this show? Beeyatchy make-up counter girls are maybe the funniest/most feared women on the planet. Divas to the core.
In this production Jennifer Phillips plays a sordid assortment of counter girls and customers. Though she seemed a bit nervous at first, she gave a great performance. She transitioned quickly into multiple characters, often times having conversations with “herself”, and she never lost her pacing. A few of the customers she played were so flawed and endearing at the same time, they could have had their own shows written about them. I’m not sure if Phillips had a director help her out at any point. I don’t remember reading anywhere that she did. I have a feeling if she had consulted a director, this would have elevated her show a bit. This play is short (about 30 minutes) and sweet. I hope Phillips takes this experience, becomes a little more confident in her performance, and develops her show into a longer production. One thing I must point out — and I hope Ms. Phillips doesn’t take offense to this — but her boobies were very prominent in her costume. I was worried a few times that they were going to pop out. Who knows…maybe this will help get more straight men in the audience.
I give this one leg in the air and four Gaye Golden Stars.
