MASHA 3000

Masha 3000 is short and sweet, clocking in at just under 30 minutes.
Erin Search-Wells’ “Masha” is an endearing if neurotic futuristic recluse hiding behind multiple online personas. I appreciated the impulse to take this character out of one play (Chekhov’s Three Sisters) and examine her under different circumstances — in its strongest moments, this performance is a thoughtful examination of who “Masha” is versus who she wants to be. However, my familiarity with Chekhov is not what it once was, and I have to confess to feeling at times like this was an inside joke that I wasn’t on the inside of.
There were also times when the multi-media aspects of the show got in the way of the storytelling, and although I admired the constructs of Masha 3000’s world, I wanted more face time with “Masha” herself.
Three stars for a compelling idea and a smart performance, and one half star for the kickass futuristic wardrobe.
